---Graduate, Undergraduate Engineering Students Encouraged to Take School of Engineering Climate Survey, Deadline Extended to Feb. 23---
The KU School of Engineering climate survey seeks information about KU Engineering undergraduate and graduate students’ perceptions about the behaviors that are expected and rewarded within the KU Engineering community. All engineering undergraduate and graduate students are strongly encouraged to take 10-15 minutes to respond. Undergraduates can find the survey here: Undergraduate DEIB Climate Survey. Graduates students can visit this link: Graduate Students DEIB Climate Survey. The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, Feb. 23.

 

---Engineering Student Council to Host E-Week Events and Giveaways for Students Feb. 19-23---
E-Week is Feb. 19-23. Engineering Student Council will have fun events and free food every day for engineering students. Event schedule:

  • 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, LEEP2 room 2300, Trivia Night and Canes. Teams of up to four will compete in a trivia contest to win $25 Amazon gift cards.
  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, LEEP2 McClendon Atrium, LEGO Building Contest and Pepsi. Students can make a LEGO creation for a chance to win one of three LEGO sets worth up to $140
  • 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, LEEP2 room G415, Bob Ross Painting. Follow a painting tutorial and get free snacks.
  • 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, LEEP2 McClendon Atrium, Pancakes and Video Games. Students can get free pancakes and play Smash Bros/Mario Kart in the LEEP2 McClendon Atrium.
  • 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, LEEP2 McClendon Atrium, Calculus Bee. Students can stop in to compete in a quick math competition for a surprise math prize.

---2024-2025 Engineering Undergraduate Ambassador Application Now Open---
Applications for 2024-2025 Engineering Undergraduate Ambassadors are now open. Prospective ambassadors are passionate about being an engineering student, willing and able to speak in public and with large groups, able to give tours to prospective students and their families, and able to attend various recruitment events throughout the year. Apply here: https://deptsec.ku.edu/~engr/forms/form/70. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 1. There is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to each engineering ambassador for each academic year.

---Applications Now Open for IHAWKe Student Leadership Roles---
KU Engineering’s IHAWKe program seeks ambassadors and program leaders for the 2024-2025 school year. Applications are available for KUEST Bridge leader, KUEST ONE leader and IHAWKe ambassador for the upcoming year. Applications are due by Monday, April 1. Find the application here.

---School of Engineering Safety Meeting Planned Feb. 21---
The School of Engineering will host a safety meeting from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Beren Petroleum Conference Center, room G192, in Slawson Hall. Samir Castilla, Ph.D. student with the Allgeier Research Group, will discuss the importance of mental health. ---Kansas Department of Transportation to Host Open House---
The Kansas Department of Transportation is hosting an open house from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at KU Innovation Park – Phase II Building. This is a chance to learn about internships and full-time jobs in transportation and safety throughout Kansas, see innovative technology in the workplace, and talk with engineers about working in the field of transportation.

---Engineers Without Borders Meeting Set for Feb. 21---
Engineers Without Borders has a meeting planned for 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in LEEP2 room 2300. This is a chance to learn more about the organization, meet new people and learn how to get involved. Students from all majors are welcome.

---KU Information Security Club to Meet Tuesday, Thursday Nights Throughout Spring Semester---
The KU Information Security Club, known as the Jayhackers, will meet throughout the spring semester each Tuesday and Thursday night from 6-8:30 p.m., in Eaton Hall room 2003. The organization will discuss skills important to succeeding in cybersecurity competitions. All majors are welcome.

---IHAWKe Sponsors Tour of Topeka Frito Lay Factory---
Join IHAWKe for a tour of the Frito Lay factory in Topeka from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, Feb. 22. Lunch and transportation will be provided. The group will depart Lawrence at 9:30 a.m. and return around 1 p.m. Students should sign up here if they are interested in attending.

---Engineering Student Council Meeting Set for Feb. 22---
Engineering Student Council will host a meeting from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, LEEP2 room G411. Attendees will hear updates about Engineering Expo and get short demo of the new Engineering Connector app. Pizza will be provided. All students are welcome.

---Undergraduate Applicants Sought for Summer Research Opportunity---
This research experience for undergraduates provides undergraduate students with an immersive research experience linked to finding equitable pathways to community disaster resilience. Students will learn about water, energy, transportation systems and resilience. They will also learn about how community planning with a social equity lens can bolster resilience. For more information and to apply, visit: https://nsfepscor.ku.edu/reu/. Review of applications starts Thursday, Feb. 22, and continues until all 10 to 12 spots are filled. The program runs from May 28-Aug. 9.

---ASME to Host Dinner with Garmin---
ASME will host a dinner with Garmin from 6-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, location TBA. Company representatives will offer an inside scoop on day-to-day life at the company, what they do and discuss career/internship opportunities.

---American Council of Engineering Companies Spring Scholarships Application Available---
The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Research Institute scholarship portal directs qualified students to more than 100 scholarships totaling nearly $1 million. This includes a $5,000 grant specifically designated for students from Kansas, scholarships for underserved students, as well as merit and need-based opportunities. The ACEC portal will automatically match students with all scholarships available to them based on their completed application. Application deadlines vary, so ACEC encourages students to apply today at acecinstitute.awardspring.com

---Engineering Study Abroad Scholarships Available---
Engineering study abroad scholarships are now available. For details or to apply, visit:
https://ku.academicworks.com/ and search for “Engineering Study Abroad Scholarship Application.” The deadline to apply is March 15 for programs taking place during summer or fall 2024. Amounts vary from $500-$2,000 depending on the specific program and the length of time spent abroad. Contact Jen Jedlicka at jedlicka@ku.edu with questions.

---Postdoctoral Fellowships Available---
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Laboratory Visiting Scientist Program is offering postdoctoral fellowships for recent graduates. Applicants with education and experience in similar or related fields in physics, mathematics and statistics, engineering, or similar, are also encouraged to apply. ---3M Rise Symposium Applications Open---
The 5th annual 3M RISE (Raising Influence in Science and Engineering) Symposium is accepting applications. This is a virtual event that will be hosted Aug.19-21. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, May 1. The symposium introduces emerging underserved doctoral students in science and engineering to the wide range of rewarding careers in research and development at 3M. Ideal applicants are expected to complete their graduate degree appointment within 24 months of the RISE event. Applicants from any STEM field are welcome. RISE Application: 3M RISE Application. ---Engineering Lost and Found Located in LEEP2, Room 1415 LEEP2---
KU Engineering lost and found is located behind the front desk in LEEP2, room1415. This is where students should take items found at the engineering complex and where they should look for items they’ve lost. Building Complex Manager Nathan Fortner is the contact for anyone with questions about the engineering lost and found.

---Submit Items for Engineering Newsletter/Digital Signage---
Students, staff or faculty interested in submitting an item for the engineering newsletter or for the School of Engineering digital signage system can visit this site for submission details: https://engr.ku.edu/newsletterdigital-signage-submission. The deadline to submit items is 8 a.m. each Thursday. The newsletter is emailed out on Monday mornings throughout the fall and spring semesters.
