General
Q: What is EXPO?
EXPO is an outreach event for elementary and middle school students to introduce them to engineering through demonstrations, activities, and competitions hosted by KU’s engineering student organizations. This event will be set up like a science fair, and there will be members of the Engineering Student Council onsite to provide guidance and assist with any questions.
Q: Where is EXPO?
EXPO activities, demonstrations, and competitions will be held at LEEP2 and Eaton: 1536 W 15th St, Lawrence, KS 66045.
Q: Do I have to pay to attend?
No! This event is completely open for everyone.
Q: What age is the EXPO geared toward?
EXPO targets children from age 7 to 14.
Q: Do I have to register?
Not necessarily. If you register beforehand, it will speed up your check-in process. Otherwise, we will have to collect additional information when you check-in.
Q: How do I register?
Click the register links above. Make a guest account and log in. Then fill out the registration form and you will receive a confirmation email after you have successfully registered.
Q: Where can I park?
This varies depending on what day you are stopping by. Check out the sections below.
Community Day | Sunday, February 23rd, 12 – 3pm
Q: Where should I park? Is it free?
Parking is free on Sunday. The map below highlights the parking spots near the engineering buildings.
Q: Can I attend?
Absolutely! Be sure to register and check-in at the desk. Be mindful that EXPO is geared towards children from the age 7 to 14.
Q: Are the activities the same for Sunday and Monday?
There are 3 categories of ‘activities’: activities, demonstrations, and competitions. Activities and demonstrations are the same for both Sunday and Monday. Competitions are not available on Sunday.
Q: Do I have to do certain activities in a certain order?
Nope, the set up for EXPO on Sunday is like a science fair. Kids can walk around and explore the activities. We will have volunteers around to assist.
School Day | Monday, February 24th, 9am – 3pm
Q: Who can attend?
Anyone can attend, but Monday is normally packed with schools. If you are not coming with a school, we would recommend you to attend Sunday.
Q: Where do we start?
Once dropped off, we would like teachers/chaperons to check in at the desk. After letting us know your class is here, our student council volunteers will show you where to drop off student’s bags and lead your class to the recommended starting point to prevent large crowds at one activity.
Q: Do we have to sign up for a time slot to participate in the competitions?
Nope, just show up and compete!
Q: What is the food situation?
Food will NOT be provided. There is a coffeehouse in the engineering building that offers sandwiches, salads, sushi, chips, and drinks. There are card and tap payment options.
There will also be a dedicated spot for the students to eat lunch.
Q: Where should we be dropped off?
Please refer to the map below for school bus drop off.
Q: What building will the activities, demonstrations and competitions be in?
All the activities, demonstrations, and competitions will be in the LEEP2 and Eaton buildings. There is a packet that lists out all of the activities and an attached map.
Q: How many Chaperones can we bring?
There is no limit! Keep in mind that Monday is the busiest day for EXPO. Normally, we host around 1300+ students on Monday. We will have volunteers on site to help with directions, concerns, and any other questions.
Q: How long should we plan to be there?
There are 35 total activities, demonstrations, and competitions. We recommend 2 hours to walk around and participate in these activities. Schools are more than welcome to stay longer.
Q: What should the students prepare in advance?
Unless your students are preparing for the competitions, just show up and be prepared to learn some engineering and have fun! Competition instructions and requirements are listed in their own PDF packet on the website.
